Dr. John Pinnix, DMD
John M. Pinnix IV DMD is a general dentist who is dedicated to providing the very highest quality dental care for his patients. He listens to people’s concerns and works well with fearful patients. Dr. Pinnix is known for his high standard for excellence and his down-to-earth, compassionate personality. Dr. Pinnix lives in south Charlotte with his wife Cori, daughter Calli and son Brock. Dr. Pinnix can be seen at Advanced Dentistry Blakeney locations.
In 1997, Dr. Pinnix received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a current member of the UNC Alumni Association. He then attended the University of Louisville School of Dentistry where he attained his Doctor of Medical Dentistry degree in 2001. Dr. Pinnix then practiced in Atlanta for five years, where he had opportunities not generally available to most dentists. He worked closely with various dental specialists and gained extensive experience with fixed and removable prosthodontics (crowns, bridges, partials, and dentures), endodontics (root canals), and cosmetic dentistry.
Dr. Pinnix has endeavored to stay at the leading edge of the latest advances in dental sciences and developments in dental technology. He has accumulated extensive continuing education credits in all disciplines of dentistry including Cosmetic Dentistry, Implant Dentistry, Endodontics, Trauma management, and treatment of Disorders of the Temperomandibular Joint (TMJ).
Dr. Pinnix’s certifications include Invisalign, for treatment of adult orthodontics with clear aligners, and certification by the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation to perform anxiety free dentistry. He has also attained his Associate Fellowship with the World Clinical Laser Institute for treatment of patients using Laser Dentistry.
Dr. Pinnix is a member of the American Dental Association,International Congress of Oral Implatologists, Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Academy of Sports Dentistry, North Carolina Dental Society, and the N.C. Second District Dental Society.
Dr. Christopher Phelps, DMD
Christopher Phelps, DMD is a general dentist who was born and raised in Greensboro, North Carolina and went on to graduate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. After completing his undergraduate studies, Dr. Phelps earned his dental degree graduating Magnum Cum Laude from the prestigious Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
Over the last couple of years Dr. Phelps has been recognized by the community and his peers for his excellence in Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry. He has been given the “Excellence in General Dentistry” award from the Academy of General Dentistry, “Outstanding Performance in the Science of Occlusion and TMJ function” award, and is an active member in the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society, awarded to the top 5% of each graduating dental class throughout the country.
Dr. Phelps has had the pleasure of providing the cosmetic dentistry for “Charlotte’s Complete Makeover”, an Extreme Makeover that was held in Charlotte with Dr. Victor Ferrari, Plastic Surgeon and Dr. Jonathan Christenbury, LASIK Eye Surgeon. In addition, Dr. Phelps has had several of his articles published in peer reviewed dental journals concerning Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry. By completing over 100 continuing education hours per year, Dr. Phelps has strived to be on the forefront of the vastly changing advancements dentistry is currently experiencing.
Dr. Phelps is a member of the American Dental Association, NC Dental Society, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and the Academy of General Dentistry. He has received his Sedation Dentistry certification from the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (D.O.C.S.) and has attained an Associate Fellowship with the World Clinical Laser Institute for the treatment and care of patients utilizing Laser Dentistry. Dr. Thomas Grimes, DDS
Thomas Grimes, DDS is a general dentist who was born in Georgia and raised in Lincolnton, North Carolina. He completed his undergraduate studies at Davidson College before earning his dental degree in 1988 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, School of Dentistry. For over 15 years Dr. Grimes has been providing the highest quality of patient care at the Matthews office. With the opening of our new office in the Blakeney area he brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience to round out the Advanced Dentistry Team.
Throughout his career, Dr. Grimes has been proud to be at the forefront of the changes taking place in dentistry. He was one of the first doctors in Charlotte to start utilizing the CEREC® one visit crowns and partial crown technology over 11 years ago. He and Dr. Phelps were the first dentists in Charlotte to offer the Zoom one hour tooth whitening and the first office in town to offer the Waterlase MD state-of-the-art Dental Laser. While Dr. Grimes mostly spends his time at the Matthews office, he can be seen at the Blakeney office upon request for cosmetic consultations. Dr. Grimes is a member of the American Dental Association and the North Carolina Dental Association.
Dr. George Betancourt, DMD
Dr. George A. Betancourt is a general dentist who received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Connecticut. He went on to complete a residency in General Dentistry at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC and served as Chief Resident his final year. In addition, he holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular and Microbiology from the University of Central Florida.
Practice interests include complex dental rehabilitation, wisdom tooth surgeries, IV sedation and cosmetic dentistry. He has extensive experience in anesthesia, physical diagnosis, emergency management of dental injuries and infections, exodontia (tooth extractions), operating room dentistry, and the dental management of medically complex and chronically ill patients.
Dr. Betancourt was the recipient of a prestigious American Dental Association high achievement scholarship and his academic honors include an outstanding achievement award given by the American Academy of Operative Dentistry. His research background includes a study of the periodontal pathogen P. gingivalis and its effects on human gingival tissues. The project was formally presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research in Chicago, IL in 2001.
Dr. Betancourt is a former division I college athlete. He played baseball at the University of Central Florida and continues to be active in sports including golf and fitness. He is fluent in English and Spanish.

Matthew Miller, D.D.S.
Dr. Matthew Miller is a general dentist who was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and his Doctor of Dental Surgery with distinction from New York University College of Dentistry in New York, NY.
While at New York University College of Dentistry, Dr. Miller received the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry Award, the Northeastern Society of Periodontics Award, and was in the Honors Aesthetics Program in the Rosenthal Institute. During his senior year, Dr. Miller was President of NYU´s Aesthetic Dental Society in association with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Currently, he is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, North Carolina Dental Society, American Dental Association, and Charlotte Dental Society.
Dr. Miller offers patients the latest advances in cosmetic and general dentistry. Services such as root canal treatment, Invisalign Orthodontic Therapy and surgical extractions are all performed with the patient's comfort and satisfaction as the highest priority. He has an extensive background in emergency care and treatment of the medically compromised patient, which contributes to his mindful and caring approach to treatment.
In addition to providing high quality care for our patients in the Matthews office, Dr. Miller is also an assistant coach for the boy's varsity lacrosse team at his alma mater, Charlotte Catholic High School.
